The world currently has more than 1.8 billion young people—a group encompassing adolescents (ages 10–19) and youth (ages 15–24) (1). Adolescents and youth transition through significant physical, psychosocial and emotional changes as they grow into adulthood, and their social roles evolve substantially in the eyes of their community and their culture (2). This is also a critical period during which they can establish health-promoting behaviours that will contribute to their present and future well-being (2). A variety of health challenges may also emerge during this period related to mental health, sexual and reproductive health (SRH), substance use, and diet and physical activity, to name a few.
