"Theatre matters because democracy matters." In this TedTalk, Director and Dramaturg Oskar Eustis explores the relationship between the performing arts and the rights of the governed. He argues that theatre and democracy have a history so intertwined that their origins can be traced back to the same decade in Ancient Athens. Eustis goes on to discuss how, in the US and internationally, theatre has proven essential in raising awareness about the most salient political issues of the time. From economies in transition to LGBTQ+ activism, theatre helps us understand ourselves and our politics, and empowers us to tell stories that matter.
