Trends in Solid Waste Management
This report from the World Bank highlights some concerning information on solid waste management around the world or the lack of it.
The world generates about 2.01 billion tonnes of municipal solid waste annually, with at least 33 percent, not managed in an environmentally safe manner.
Worldwide, each person each day on average produces about 0.74 kilograms of wastes (but that ranges from 0.11 to 4.54 kilograms.)
The article states that "global waste is expected to grow to 3.40 billion tonnes by 2050". Additionally, there is a positive correlation between high-income countries and waste, and it is projected that those countries will continue to produce more waste as they grow.
The article also states that the most effective approach to dealing with the problem of managed waste is taking local solutions.
