A group of young people from Kosovo started a project in which they have started recycling small amounts of organic waste and transform it into organic fertilizer for plants. This is a part of the larger effort to combat food waste, which continues to be a big problem around the world. Around the globe, about one-third of all food produced for human consumption (about 1.3 billion tons) is wasted.
By using organic waste as a fertilizer, the young people have been able to create a product that enables natural plant growth without using artificial fertilizers, and it improves soil fertility and reduces the need for pesticides.
What started as a project among friends, has now turned into a social venture which they called ‘Terra Crawlers’ with the help of UPSHIFT: Social Impact. UPSHIFT: Social Impact helps young people in Kosovo to become social innovators and entrepreneurs It also provides funding, equipment, and mentorship to initiatives.
