The General Assembly Session of the United Nations is held every year in September. Presidents, delegates, and representatives of civil society groups come together to discuss some of the most pressing issues facing our world. The newly-elected President of the United Nations 76th General Assembly, Abdulla Shahid of the Maldives, feels that it is vital for young people to also be involved.
In an interview ahead of the 76th General Assembly session, he stated that he was once a young diplomat that found his confidence in multilateralism at the General Assembly and now, he wants to give this same opportunity to young diplomats from under-represented countries.
To fulfill this goal, he launched the President of the General Assembly Youth Fellowship Programme. This programme allows young diplomats from under-represented countries to work in the office of the President of the UN General Assembly and with the countries they represent. He stated, “The best investment in multilateralism is investing in young people. And that is what I am going to do.”
