In September 2015, the 193 Member States of the United Nations adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Comprised of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), 169 targets and 232 indicators, the 2030 Agenda tackles a broad range of global challenges, aiming to eradicate poverty, reduce multiple and intersecting inequalities, address climate change, end conflict and sustain peace. Thanks to the relentless efforts of women’s rights advocates from across the globe, the commitment to gender equality are prominent, comprehensive and cross-cutting.

Building on the commitments and norms contained in the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (UN CEDAW), the 2030 Agenda is clear: Development will only be sustainable if its benefits accrue equally to both women and men, and women’s rights will only become a reality if they are part of broader efforts to protect the planet and ensure that all people can live with dignity and respect.
