Nepal is a developing country, however, it is rich in art and culture. There are numerous forms of crafts that are done from the ancient times and a variety of materials locally sourced are used. These products are sold globally. The artisans are skilled but I have seen their plight. These people who work so hard and create a variety of craft are not recognised and given their share and are under paid, hence, the people suffer, live in poor dwellings and have financial crisis. Child labour in these industries are very high as people cannot afford to send their children to school and believe that involving them in their work is the only way to earn more money. Many people have become victims of forced labour. This has just not resulted in the artisans suffering but also, the youth of the country migrating to various parts of the world seeking better opportunities.
Well, this is just not in Nepal that the artisans have not been able to get their right share in spite Fair Trade practises and movement which is trying to ensure that each artisan gets their part of income, recognition and live a good life but there are various countries in Asia like India, Bangladesh were people work and live in poor and unhealthy conditions and are victims of forced labour with no one to raise their voices to.
The entire globe is talking about Sustainable Goals 2030 to ensure we are able to save our planet, and majority of the products created by these artisans are using locally sourced, recyclable material which causes no harm to the environment. Hence, working for the rights of these people will not only save their lives but will also create awareness around the globe about the products they create and the benefits of buying these over those which harm the environment and cannot be recycled.
