February 8th was Internet Safety Day, a day to promote safer and more responsible use of the Internet. Flow, a leading telecom provider in the Caribbean region, partnered with UNICEF to present a virtual conference entitled ‘Online Safely: What to Lookout For’.
Greg Morris, Technical Expert of Flow Barbados, stated that “The internet, and indeed the provision of connectivity, is now a fundamental part of our daily lives, and while there are several benefits to be had, there are also some unwanted elements in the online world. Sometimes, these unwanted elements can be minimised altogether.” The conference also emphasized the importance of focusing on youth in how to ensure the Internet can be a safe and better place for all.
Dr. Nicole Lynch, counseling psychologist and consultant to UNICEF, also emphasized building trust with young people by saying that "“Engagement is key, and the relationships we establish with our young people in the real world need to be built on trust, so they can be more comfortable in sharing their experiences in online world with us".
