When it comes to mental health and mental ill health, the words we use matter more than we think. The way we talk about mental health and people experiencing mental distress can reinforce negative stereotypes and be stigmatizing, without us even realizing it.

Language is a powerful tool for creating awareness and fighting stigma, so here are a few tips on how to be mindful of the words we use and how to avoid causing offence when we don’t mean to. We have tried to pick terms that are non-stigmatizing, but we understand that each person is unique, and some people may not identify with the language chosen here.

Quand on aborde les questions de santé mentale, les mots que nous utilisons ont bien plus d’importance que nous ne le pensons. La façon dont nous parlons de la santé mentale et des personnes en détresse psychologique peut renforcer les stéréotypes négatifs et s’avérer stigmatisant pour ces personnes sans même que nous n’en soyons conscients.

Le langage est un outil puissant pour susciter la prise de conscience et combattre la stigmatisation, alors voici quelques conseils afin d’être attentif aux mots que nous utilisons et d’éviter de blesser les gens sans le vouloir. Nous nous sommes efforcés de choisir des termes non-stigmatisants, mais nous sommes conscients que chaque personne est unique et il se peut que certains ne s’identifient pas aux termes proposés ici.
