To be able to approach the topic of mental health, and deal with these challenges in a healthy way, it is important to understand the relationship between culture and mental health, especially as it pertains to underrepresented groups.

This article offers 4 ways in which culture can impact mental health:

  • Cultural stigma - in certain cultures there is stigma around mental health, thus creating a barrier to addressing the issue.
  • Understanding symptoms - culture can impact how someone describes their symptoms.
  • Community support - since mental health sometimes has a stigma attached to it in certain cultures, community support may be limited.
  • Resources - in some circumstances and cultures, it can be hard to find proper resources

All these factors are extremely important to consider when addressing mental health issues with underrepresented communities.
