Children and young people’s mental health has never been so high on the public agenda. But it’s vital that we have the basic facts if we are to see realized our vision of better mental health for all children, wherever they live, whatever their background or class. That's why we've put together this handy fact sheet, collating some of the key facts and statistics about children and young people's mental health. 1 in 5 children experience a mental health problem at some point during childhood, but many do not get effective timely support. Mental health problems are common among young people (affecting one in ten, or an average three in every classroom). On average, children and young people with mental health difficulties go ten years between first becoming unwell and getting any help, according to our evidence review. This decade of delay sees their problems multiply and get progressively worse, eventually escalating into a crisis
