Digital Inclusion of Youth
This webpage from the International Telecommunications Union gives a detailed outline on Digital Inclusion of Youth.
Digital inclusion of youth is important for a variety of reasons. One, digital skills open doors up to future job opportunities. Two, developing digital skills will allow youth to meaningfully participate in society. Three, digital skills help youth to feel more empowered and all of them to open up opportunities they would otherwise not have the chance to do so.
When it comes to the Sustainable Development Goals, the importance of youth digital inclusion is particularly important to SDG 8 - decent work for all and economic growth. "It is estimated that tens of millions of future jobs will require far more advanced digital skills, including coding, software, and app development, network management, machine learning, Big Data analysis, the Internet of Things (IoT), cybersecurity and Distributed Ledger technologies like blockchain."
Some challenges to the digital inclusion of youth include a "talent gap" by which individuals who do not have digital skills will be disadvantaged, which may lead to worsening socioeconomic inequalities. But there are a number of solutions to this challenge, including engaging young people through youth employment opportunities to develop their digital skills.
