Being a Mentor

The resource page links to some of the top content designed for young changemakers who are interested in becoming mentors to others. Search for content to help you grow your knowledge and skills as a mentor, and find tools, best practices, and other resources to help you be a strong mentor.

Fact/Info Sheet

  • Mentor Everywhere Mentoring Agreement Worksheet - This is a worksheet created by Mentorship Everywhere that helps the mentor and the mentee to define what is important to the mentee. It includes specific areas or concerns that the mentor/mentee wants to address during the mentor relationship, what they would like to gain from the mentor/mentee relationship, what they value in life, their current challenges, and what they are currently tolerating.

Manual or Handbook

  • Mentorship Toolkit for Mentors - This is a mentorship toolkit created by IREX through the Mandela Washington Fellowship program.
  • Mentoring Guide - This is a comprehensive 18-page document discussing key mentorship skills, tips, and providing some basic resources/templates for measuring goals.

Strategy

  • Mentor's COVID-19 Resources - This consists of MENTOR’s COVID-19 resources, an E-mentoring Guide, and an E-Mentoring Checklist.

Toolkit

  • Youth Mentoring Programs: Building Youth/Mentor Relationships - This is a resource from Community Tool Box consisting of detailed information on how to build youth/mentor relationships, why the mentor’s relationship with his/her protégé matters, communications skills between these two, and troubleshooting when things go wrong between the mentee and the mentor.
  • Youth Mentoring Programs: Recruiting Youth to Your Mentoring Program - This is content shared by Community Tool Box about recruiting youth to mentoring programs. It aims at showing what is meant by recruiting youth, who should be recruited, where to recruit, and how to recruit them.
  • YouthPower Action AGYW Mentoring Program Toolkit - The YouthPower Action mentoring program for adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) is a multi-component intervention including group-based mentoring; curricula-based programming.
  • University of Washington Mentoring Toolkit - This is a toolkit for "staff faculty, and leaders interested in being mentored." The toolkit speaks directly to the benefits of being a mentor, determining your needs, reaching out to mentors, improving communications, and ending relationships appropriately.

  • How to be a Great Mentor (Video) - This is a 14-minute + TEDx Talk video by Kenneth Ortiz Kenneth Ortiz who shares his thoughts and wisdom on what is needed to develop successful mentor relationships to raise up the next level of leaders around us.

  • 4 Things All Mentor and Mentees Should Know - This is an article with tips to be the best mentor/mentee you can be, and remember, like all good relationships, mentorship is a two-way street.
