TITLE -Management of fall armyworm in maize
In the photo you will see Emmanuel Zuza Jnr and Shadrick Phiri showing a smallholder farmer on how they can control fall armyworm using local remedies. Fall armyworm is an insect pest of maize that currently has infested Africa. Pesticides are expensive to buy and hence with the knowledge Emmanuel has in entomology he is trying out local remedies for control of the pest such as use of chillies, ash, neem tree extracts and sugar solution which are cheap in Malawi.
The use of these local remedies has shown to be effective though there is no scientific proven data for them. In addition, this reduces the amount of pesticide usage therefore safe for the environment.
