TITLE -Increasing the economic empowerment of young girls.
Currently in Nigeria, young girls residing in various rural communities in Enugu State are faced with so many challenges ranging from Gender inequality to poverty. This situation is clearly manifested in places like Obollo-Afor, where the girl child education and economic empowerment is not taken seriously. The place of the girl child is said to be in the kitchen because she is seen as a weaker sex, who shouldn’t have any goals or ambitions in life. This is why cases like child marriage, Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) are presently high in the community.
In addressing the foregoing challenges, in 2017, we conducted several skill acquisition programs for various young girls in the community. One of the skills we taught them was soap making. They were taught how to make liquid soaps, bar soaps and even bathing soaps. At the end of the program, we could see joy and excitement on their faces. We could also see that these young girls were now more than ever committed to busting all forms of patriarchal mindsets in their community. Indeed real, positive and long-lasting change begins from the grassroots.
