What's New on YouthLead?
Camila Peña talks to students about positive communications.
How Camila Peña Responded to the Needs of her Community During COVID-19
Former YouthLead Ambassador Camila Peña, of Columbia, was in the process of working on a communications project for her neighborhood in Santa Marta when the COVID-19 pandemic struck and dismantled her priorities.
She was able to use the YouthLead online platform as an organization tool, giving her the ability to act fast and create crucial social media campaigns to help young Colombians understand safety measures and protocols during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Find out how she used video to communicate with her community and fed 2,000 people with fellow youth leaders in our two-part feature and Changemakers Spotlight.

In a time of uncertainty, youth interventions cannot ignore the potential of the growing virtual gig economy to offer new opportunities for self-employment. This session explores how virtual work can empower youth to circumvent barriers to employment in their geographies so that they can earn incomes and practice resilience amid limited economic opportunities (Kenya), conflict (Palestine), and disruption (COVID19). Virtual work has risks due to informality - lack of job security, low wages, and few or no benefits. IREX and KaziRemote share initial insights on a Skills for Virtual Gigs research initiative for youth in Kenya and Education for Employment share lessons learned from a model implemented in Palestine to equip youth with career support, skills, and networks for virtual work.

This summer, YouthLead organized an online youth assembly to celebrate International Youth Day 2020. The event, titled, “Youth in the Lead: Youth Engagement for Global Action,” brought together youth leaders, advocates, and community organizers across various networks to explore topics such as the role of Positive Youth Development (PYD) in youth engagement, the power of networks, and organizational readiness for youth engagement from local to a global level. The virtual event featured talks by young changemakers, interactive discussion and breakout sessions, and networking opportunities. More than 150 participants attended the live event and around 15 speakers shared their wisdom.
