Meet the YouthLead #Reaching16 Essay Contest Winners

Congratulations to the 16 winners of the YouthLead #Reaching16 Essay Contest! Since December 2020, YouthLead, and partner United Nations Development Programme, has been running the #Reaching16 campaign, which promotes just, peaceful, and inclusive societies. Part of the campaign was an essay contest in which we invited young changemakers from around the globe to submit personal essays highlighting the important peacebuilding work they or someone they know is doing to ensure their community is #Reaching16. The finalists were selected because of the power and impact they conveyed through their essays.

Learn About Design Thinking

How can you use design thinking to tackle the challenges youth face globally, and to create meaningful change? Design thinking is a human-centered approach to innovation that integrates the needs of people, the possibilities of novel solutions, and the requirements for success. The UNLEASH Global Innovation Lab, and its Lead Scale Partner, Chemonics International, hosted a webinar to guide participants through the UNLEASH innovation process to design solutions that address issues in their communities. The session demonstrated how passionate, empowered youth who are equipped with the right tools, resources, and networks can accelerate social impact and address sustainability challenges at scale. This workshop is an opportunity for viewers to gain insight into the UNLEASH methodology, which gathers young innovators through its in-person and online programs to collaborate on solutions that address the Sustainable Development Goals. Watch the webinar.

Fernanda Ribeiro is the first YouthLead Ambassador from Brazil.

Brave Enough to Demand Change

For women like Fernanda Ribeiro, building just, peaceful, and inclusive societies is dangerous. While it’s common for changemakers to encounter resistance, women paving new ground in Brazil are at risk of losing their lives.

Femicide, the killing of a woman or girl on account of her gender, increased by seven percent in Brazil from 2018 to 2019. While Brazil was the first country to pilot a new law that criminalizes femicide and introduced tougher penalties for those responsible for such crimes, the March 2018 murder of outspoken politician and LGBTQ advocate Marielle Franco threw femicide back into international conversation.
