WoMen Against Rape (WAR) has been a safe haven for women and children in Botswana for the last 28 years. This month, WAR’s Executive Director Peggie Ramaphane , Research Coordinator Helen Anne Apps, and Shelter Manager Gofileone Gontle Samakabadi are guests on The PYD Lab where they discuss the organization’s vital role in the Northwest District and how a new grant from the Collective Action to Reduce Gender-Based Violence (CARE-GBV) will help build an internal culture of resilience and wellness for their staff.
Funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the CARE-GBV Small Grants Program, gave five organizations grants to build organizational cultures that promote self-care and wellness for staff to help strengthen the quality of GBV programming. WAR was one of five grantees selected from 518 applicants to receive an award ranging from $50,000 to $125,000 over a one-year period.
Samakabadi explained during the podcast that this will benefit staff who work directly with survivors. “We need to help them be more resilient, be more supportive, so that they may be able to deliver quality service to survivors.”
The episode also dives into advocating for reform with policymakers and how the COVID-19 pandemic may have exacerbated gender-based violence in the home.
Plus, the three positive youth development resources recommended for implementers and practitioners this episode are, CARE GBV Maps - How to Notes, Integrating Mental Health and Psychosocial Support into Youth Programming: A Toolkit, and the Activism Against Gender-based Violence: Starter Kit.
