Funded by the US Department of State’s Secretary’s Office of Global Women’s Issues, the project supports S/GWI’s goal to promote the rights and empowerment of women and girls through three closely linked Objectives:
- Objective 1: Young people are more resilient to restrictive gender norms affecting their life choices and opportunities.
- Objective 2: An enabling environment is cultivated in schools or community-based organizations and communities to foster equal collaboration amongst young people.
- Objective 3: A network of participants, stakeholders, and partners at the community and national levels better promote girls’ increased skills and opportunities.
Participants from Tserovani school found a need to create a safe non-educational space inside the school where the students are able to do their homework, work on group projects, read, relax, and network. The aim of the project is to create a safe and friendly environment that will be used for both educational and extracurricular activities. The Community Action Plan had a sustainable result. The space for non-formal education purposes was created at the school facility. The space is open for all students and teachers at school and continues to host extracurricular activities such as training, movie screenings, debates, etc.
Also, a Facebook page for the space was created, which will be used to disseminate information about the events organized in the space, as well as for the reservation of the space. The page already has 76 subscribers. According to the mentor, the space is already very popular at the school, students are making reservations to spend time there.
The initiative was well-received by the school administrations. At the Action Festival the principal stressed the importance and need for this kind of space, considering the fact that many students are from IDP settlements and lack their own space for studying at their homes. To make the space more functional and beneficial for the students, the project mentor, Klara Dvalishvili, awarded SG! participants with a personal computer, which will be available at the "Open Space".
