Funded by the US Department of State’s Secretary’s Office of Global Women’s Issues, the project supports S/GWI’s goal to promote the rights and empowerment of women and girls through three closely linked Objectives:
• Objective 1: Young people are more resilient to restrictive gender norms affecting their life choices and opportunities.
• Objective 2: An enabling environment is cultivated in schools or community-based organizations and communities to foster equal collaboration amongst young people.
• Objective 3: A network of participants, stakeholders, and partners at the community and national levels better promote girls’ increased skills and opportunities.
The aim of the project was to address the problem of early marriage and empower other girls from the community. Through organizing contests (art, essay/poetry competition), meetings with the local prominent women, social advertising, and movie screenings, the participants from Savaneti Public school wanted to raise awareness about gender equality, and women’s rights and promote education among their peers.
To achieve the above-mentioned goal, participants implemented the following activities:
1. Paintings Contest; Essay/Poem Contests
2. Film Screening
3. TED-Talks - Empowered Women from the Community
4. Social Advertisement
As a result of the project, joint efforts of the Two clubs, the Community Action Plan project was successfully completed. The project gave the other school students to participate in the activities, including the essay/posters/poems competitions. However, one of the biggest impacts had the social campaign video that was recorded by the participants with the help of facilitators. The campaign video premiered at the Action Festival in front of invited guests, community members, parents, school teachers, and IP representatives. The video was emotional because the participants were sincerely expressing their thoughts and ideas and spread the message on the importance of gender equality.
