ABOUT THIS PROJECT

The word Ukwafwa simply means “HELP” in the Zambian context.

UKWAFWA project focuses on improving the health of underprivileged young adolescents in communities through raising awareness of issues affecting them. HIV and Teenage Pregnancy is fast becoming a challenging issue for young people residing in rural and peri-urban communities especially, in Luapula and Central Provinces of Zambia. Luapula Province, the community which boasts of a rich cultural heritage but is lacking in resources related to infrastructure and education, and highly susceptible to gender-based violence and other general health challenges.

These communities are currently feeling the effects, following what seems like the normalization of Teenage Pregnancy. Many teenage mothers have dropped out of school, and the children do not get the adequate support required from their teenage parent. This project would share critical knowledge on Sexual and Reproductive Health to both girls and boys, and will also equip young girls with the necessary information to be assertive and maintain the focus on education and future dreams and aspirations.

One of the main reasons for we started this project was to support and promote health of the socially disadvantaged young people living in these communities mentioned above. We believe this is the only way we can contribute to the betterment of our communities today. Since we started, we have been to Liteta Basic school in Chisamba district in the Central province of Zambia. At the school, we raised awareness on HIV prevention and further we addressed factors leading to high rate of HIV/AIDS among young people to over 200 pupils at the schools.

This is a very important…

This is a very important initiative. We have seen that most new infection are in the adolescent and young adult age group. They need to be informed and have access to preventive and treatment services. Well done!!!

If we help the adolescents in any way possible, then we are building and securing leaders of the next generation. Hence, it is within this regard that we need to help them in making healthy choices on factors that might affect them.
